Your birth partner during labour can be your partner, a parent or someone else important to you. If you wish, you can also bring a doula, a trained birth support worker, with you to the birth.
If possible, discuss your hopes, expectations, and any concerns about childbirth with your support person before you go into labour. Together, you can discuss the roles each of you will play and what support you would like them to provide during delivery.
It is important that your support person is healthy during childbirth. If your support person has a respiratory infection or gastroenteritis, for example, they cannot be present during the birth.
