Your local health station is responsible for the follow-up care of gestational diabetes. You can find your health station at hel.fi/healthstations
Having gestational diabetes significantly increases your risk of developing type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Because of this risk, you should regularly monitor
- your weight
- your waist measurement
- your blood pressure.
You should also have blood tests to monitor various blood levels. You can reduce your risk of getting ill by adopting a healthy lifestyle. You will be supported in this as part of your monitoring.
How to start monitoring
If you have had gestational diabetes:
- Follow-up monitoring can start at a postpartum check-up at the maternity clinic. Follow-up monitoring will start automatically in Maisa one year after giving birth.
- Follow-up monitoring can also be started at the health station if it has been a long time since the onset of gestational diabetes or if follow-up monitoring was not started in connection with the postpartum check-up. In this case, contact your health station via the Maisa service. If you are unable to use Maisa for some reason, you can also contact the health station by phone.
