School health care

The purpose of school health care is to support the growth and development of schoolchildren and the educational work of parents. School health care is free of charge and statutory.

School health care is part of student welfare services, the aim of which is to promote the wellbeing of the school community and create a safe operating culture.

In school health care, we:

  • support the growth, development, health and wellbeing of pupils
  • strengthen the conditions for learning
  • prevent social exclusion
  • work with parents to support their educational work.

Health examinations form the backbone of school health care. We carry out comprehensive health assessments in grades 1, 5 and 8. These include examinations by both the school nurse and a doctor, and we also invite guardians to attend. In other grades, we carry out the checks in the form of meetings between the pupils and the school nurse. School health care also provides pupils with the vaccinations started at the maternity and child health clinic in accordance with the national vaccination programme.

Dental clinics send appointment invitations to guardians for the oral health check-up of the schoolchild four times during comprehensive school.
