Frequently asked questions about memory testing
I am worried about my own memory or that of a loved one
Please contact your local health station or a private clinic, where your situation will be assessed and a memory test carried out. If necessary, they will issue a referral to the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic. At the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic, we assess people over the age of 70 whose memory, cognitive function or ability to carry out everyday tasks has declined.
Care and treatment to patients under the age of 70 is provided by the HUS Neurology Outpatient Clinic.

I have been issued a referral to the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic by a health station or private clinic. Do I need to book appointments for the outpatient clinic or, for example, a brain MRI, myself?
No, you do not; you will usually receive an invite to a brain MRI and an appointment at the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic by post.
If you use the Maisa client portal, your booked appointments will also be visible there.
Please note that it may take 2–3 months for the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic to contact you after your referral has been approved.
The results of the examination are discussed at a doctor’s appointment at the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic. If the results require urgent further examinations, you will be contacted sooner.
A medical imaging examination is just one part of memory testing.
From the point of view of examinations and planning further treatment, we consider it important that a loved one who knows the patient well is present at all appointments.
Please bring the following with you to your appointment:
- photo ID (if possible)
- your spectacles and hearing aid
- questionnaires sent to you in advance
- an up-to-date list of your medication.

You can also come on your own if you do not have a loved one who can accompany you.
Yes, you do; please visit a laboratory at least a week before your doctor’s appointment.
