Instructions for premedication patients and escorts

These instructions tell you what you need to do as a dental patient before and after premedication. Premedication means medication related to dental treatment that is taken before the treatment. These instructions also tell you what the person escorting the patient needs to do.

Previous illnesses

Report all your current and past illnesses when premedication is being planned.

Also report any medicines you take regularly, especially sleeping and sedative medicines.

Before premedication

Do not eat or drink for four (4) hours before the procedure.

Come to the clinic 60 minutes before your appointment. You may have to wait before the medication is given to you.

After premedication

You must be accompanied by an escort.

  • Do not go to work or school.
  • Do not drive a car.
  • Do not use alcohol.
  • Child patients must stay at home or indoors all day. Do not take your child to daycare.

Instructions for the escort

The patient is recovering from premedication. However, the premedication may cause the patient to feel mildly tired for several hours. The premedication may also impair the patient's memory.

  • Escort the patient home safely to rest. The patient must not be left alone. If the patient is a child, they must have responsible adult supervision for the rest of the day.
  • Make sure that the patient follows the instructions given.
  • Give the patient painkillers according to the instructions given.
