Free contraception

We offer free contraception to individuals under the age of 25. In certain situations, free contraception is also available to those over the age of 25.

Our free contraception services include:

For individuals under the age of 25, we provide:

  • contraceptive pills and vaginal rings for a year  
  • copper IUD, hormonal IUD and contraceptive implant until the age of 25. 

For individuals over the age of 25, we offer:

  • a copper IUD or hormonal IUD and contraceptive implant when you first start using this method
  • birth control pills or vaginal rings for a three-month period if you have not used either before
  • a copper IUD, hormonal IUD or contraceptive implant within one year of an abortion
  • a copper IUD, hormonal IUD and contraceptive implant for clients of substance abuse services

However, please note that only the basic pharmaceutical range in Helsinki is available free of charge.

Contraceptive counselling at health stations, centralised contraceptive counselling services and school, and student health care are provided free of charge. If you are not eligible for free contraceptives, you will receive an electronic prescription that can be used to purchase the product at a pharmacy.

Free condoms for pregnancy prevention and protection against sexually transmitted diseases are available from health stations, school nurses, student health care nurses, maternity and child health clinics and centralised contraceptive counselling services.
