We provide free contraception in the following situations:
For women under the age of 25, we provide
- contraceptive pills
- vaginal rings
- copper IUD
- hormonal IUD
- contraceptive implants.
You can receive free contraception in Helsinki if you are under the age of 25, even if you have previously received free contraception in another municipality or abroad. Women who live elsewhere but are studying in Helsinki and have chosen Helsinki health services are also eligible for free contraception.
For women over the age of 25, we offer a free copper IUD, hormonal IUD or contraceptive implant when you first start using this method. You can receive free birth control pills or vaginal rings for three months if you have not used either before.
Copper IUDs, hormonal IUDs and contraceptive implants are free after abortion and for the customers of substance abuse services.
However, only the basic pharmaceutical range in Helsinki is free of charge.
Contraception counselling at health stations, centralises contraception counselling services and school and student health care is free of charge. If you are not eligible for free contraceptives, you will receive an electronic prescription which you can use to buy the product at a pharmacy.
Free condoms for the prevention of pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases are available from health stations, school nurses, student health care nurses, maternity and child health clinics and centralised contraceptive counselling.
