You can receive family care for the elderly either in your own home or in a family care home. It helps you maintain your social relationships and daily functioning, and can be arranged on a part-time or around-the-clock basis.
Family care is provided based on a service needs assessment. You can apply for it if you do not yet require service housing or 24-hour institutional care but need additional support to complement services at home, for example due to memory challenges. Fees are charged according to the client fee price list.

How can I receive family care for the elderly?
The decision to grant family care is based on an individual evaluation of your overall situation, taking into account the complexity and level of commitment required in the care you need, as well as any need for monitoring and guidance. When assessing your situation, factors considered include the amount, complexity and intensity of support required for daily personal care, such as washing, dressing, eating, exercise, medication, using the toilet, and other health-related procedures.
- You need extra support to live at home and cannot manage independently
- You require guidance, support, or the presence of another person in your daily life
- You need someone present at night due to insecurity or other reasons, but not full night-time care
- You receive services such as home care, but they are insufficient to ensure your daily life runs smoothly
- You need continuous hospital-level or other demanding professional care
- You require regular assistance at night
- Your behaviour poses a risk to yourself or others
- You need mobility aids or equipment that cannot be used in a family home
- You constantly need the help of two people for daily activities
You can apply by:
- asking your designated family care support or client assistance worker about family care
- contacting Senior Info on weekdays, 9.00–15.00, by phone at 09 310 44556(Link starts a phone call) or by email at seniori.info@hel.fi(Link opens default mail program)
