What can you experience in Sibelius Park?
Sibelius Park is located by a beautiful seaside landscape. The park is divided into two sections, with Mechelininkatu running between the eastern and western sections. The park is named after the composer Jean Sibelius.
The construction of Sibelius Park began in the 1930s, and over the decades, both natural and more built areas have formed in the location. The most popular attraction in the park, the Sibelius Monument, was unveiled in 1967. The park also features a natural curly birch grove planted in honour of President Mauno Koivisto.
Overhauling the park
Sibelius Park has been overhauled in recent years to better serve the increased visitor numbers. The Musiikkiaukio square in front of the Sibelius Monument has been expanded to accommodate small-scale music events.
The playground in the park is suitable for both younger and older children, and the equipment in the adjacent fitness area has been selected with senior users also in mind. The dog park is intended for small dogs.
The park’s decorative pond has been renovated and another pond, which had previously disappeared, has been restored. Sibelius Park has trees, bushes and perennials that have been combined to preserve the park’s distinctive atmosphere. Seasonal plants and flowers grown from bulbs add variety to the park’s appearance.
