Information about the mortuary facilities in Helsinki

The Helsinki mortuary facilities in Malmi are intended for the storage of the deceased in Helsinki and for loved ones to say their farewells. There are also mortuary facilities in Helsinki's hospitals and senior centres.

As a rule, farewells usually take place at the last place of care of the deceased. However, as a relative of the deceased, you have the possibility to book a separate, free-of-charge room at the Helsinki mortuary in Malmi to say goodbye to your loved one. In the room, you can dress and prepare them for their final journey. The facilities take into account the needs of Helsinki residents from different cultural backgrounds and also allow for the washing of the deceased. There are four farewell and washrooms in total.

Please note that the farewell room is not intended for memorial or funeral services.

Tips for when you come to say your farewell to your loved one

  • Towels and LED candles are provided at the facility.
  • The use of live fire or incense is not permitted.
