Information about the mortuary facilities in Helsinki

Photo: Hanna Hänninen
The Helsinki mortuary facilities in Malmi are intended for the storage of the deceased in Helsinki and for loved ones to say their farewells. There are also mortuary facilities in Helsinki's hospitals and senior centres.

As a rule, farewells usually take place at the last place of care of the deceased. However, as a relative of the deceased, you have the possibility to book a separate, free-of-charge room at the Helsinki mortuary in Malmi to say goodbye to your loved one. In the room, you can dress and prepare them for their final journey. The facilities take into account the needs of Helsinki residents from different cultural backgrounds and also allow for the washing of the deceased. There are four farewell and washrooms in total.

Guidelines for visiting the mortuary facilities grounds

  • Please avoid unnecessary movement around the grounds. Respect the privacy and peace of the deceased and their loved ones.
  • Please note that only maintenance and service vehicles are permitted in the courtyard and green areas.
  • Picking plants in the mortuary facilities and cemetery grounds is prohibited.

Guidelines for saying goodbye to a deceased relative

  • Towels and LED candles are available in the room.
  • The use of open flames or incense is not permitted.
  • Embalming of the deceased is not currently available at the mortuary facilities.
