Notifying about the keeping of animals

Notify the Finnish Food Authority of the animals and their keeping location.

No notification needs to be submitted regarding pets. The notification obligation regarding animal keeping locations pertains to bovines, sheep, goats, pigs (including potbellied pigs), horses, fowl and bees. Once the keeping location has been registered, you can submit a notification regarding what species of animals you are keeping (animal keeping notification). The animal keeping notification and the keeping location notification are submitted separately. You must submit the notification even in cases of short-term keeping, e.g. with summer chickens.

The purpose of the notification obligation is to secure food safety starting from animal farms. If there is a threat of a serious animal disease, farms can be informed quickly.

Dogs must be registered in the Dog Registry, which is maintained by the Finnish Food Authority. Notification is not required for other pets.
