Oulunkylä

Oulunkylän ostoskeskus, Ogeli
Oulunkylä is a historically stratified residential area, built around a railway station that opened for passenger traffic in 1881. Oulunkylä consists of five sub-districts, each built in a different period.

Oulunkylä as an area

The completion of the Jokeri Light Rail will improve accessibility in the area and significantly increase the size of Oulunkylä. Jokeri Light Rail will meet the main line in the renovated centre of Oulunkylä.

New housing and services are planned for Oulunkylä. Up to 5,000 new residents are targeted for the district by 2030.

Thanks to its central location and excellent transport links, Oulunkylä offers great business opportunities. New office premises are planned for the centre of Oulunkylä and around the Jokeri Light Rail stops, for example. By 2030, the aim is to create up to 1,500 new jobs in the area. For more information on business opportunities in the city of Helsinki see the “For companies” page.

•    Oulunkylä centre will be developed as a rail interchange and more housing, services and commercial space for grocery and other retail will be built there.

•    Housing and a new secondary and primary school are planned along Oulunkyläntie.

•    Käskynhaltijantie will be converted into a boulevard and new housing for around 1,800 residents will be built on both sides of the street. Two north-south green routes with park squares are planned through the area.

•    New apartment blocks are being built along Maaherrantie in Veräjämäki and a day care centre is being built along Jokiniementie.

•    Apartments for around 600 new residents are planned for Maunula along Pirjontie and Pirkkolantie.

•    In Oulunkylä and Maunula, there are ongoing site-specific zoning projects, the progress of which can be followed in the Helsinki Map Service.

Traffic connections

Jokeri Light Rail is an express tramway line to be built between Itäkeskus and Keilaniemi, replacing bus line 550. The fast tramway will make it easier to move between districts. There will be eight new stops for the Oulunkylä area: Pirkkola, Pirjontie, Maunula, Tuusulanväylä, Käskynhaltijantie, Mäkitorpantie, Oulunkylä station and Veräjämäki.
