Distance learning studies

Students of the city's general upper secondary schools can complete distance learning studies offered by the city. Distance learning studies mean study units in which the students participate in online lessons according to the weekly schedule.

Helsinki Online Secondary School: distance learning studies

The lessons are held on platforms provided by the city, in Google Meet or O365 Teams, during time slots 6, 7 and 8 of the city's shared weekly schedule. The number and duration of lessons is the same as in general upper secondary school study units that young people complete in the contact teaching.  Distance learning periods correspond to contact teaching periods in general upper secondary schools that follow the City of Helsinki’s five-period system.

You will participate in all of the distance lessons. In other words, you cannot complete the study unit independently or only by passing the exam, unless you have permission from the school principle in exceptional circumstances. For example, you cannot choose two study entities that take up the same time slot in the list of studies offered. If some of your own school’s study units partly overlap with your distance learning periods on one day per week (for example, general upper secondary schools that follow the four-period system), this is an acceptable reason for an absence.

As a student, you are personally responsible for making sure that you can study undisturbed and carry out group work with other students during lessons. In order to participate in distance learning, you need to be able to use the camera and the microphone on your electronic devices.

The distance studies on offer can be found on Wilma, and registration is open until the start of the period.  The studies available include a wide range of language studies and refresher studies for students taking the matriculation examination.
