Suomenlinna streets: renovation of the routes and Piperin puisto park

The renovation of the routes on Iso Mustasaari and the historically valuable Piperin puisto park in Suomenlinna started in September 2020. The work will continue periodically over three years, until autumn 2023.

During the renovation, the surfaces and partially broken edges of the island’s routes will be repaired. The project will also improve the usability, accessibility and storm water control of the area. The underground municipal infrastructure under the routes will also be renovated.

Vegetation in good condition along the routes will be preserved and restored as needed. The trees at the worksite will preserved and pruned by an arborist who specialises in caring for old trees. When the project is completed in autumn 2023, residents and visitors will have access to familiar routes that will be easier to move on and maintain.

The renovation of the routes started with the repair of the makadam surface that is typical of the routes in Suomenlinna. Then, digging the sewage water line in front of the pink Rantakasarmi was started.

Renovation of Piperin puisto

During the Piperin puisto contract, the pond in the park will be expanded and dredged in parts. The water level will either be lowered, or the pond will be emptied for some time. The project involves the construction of the foundations for a pier, a bridge and a pergola. The park will get new trees, the gravel paths will be renovated, and the green areas will be made more impressive than ever.

For both the park and the routes, the project team will pay special attention to using materials that are typical of Suomenlinna, as well as preserving the area’s original style in the green areas, too. The work will largely be carried out under archaeological supervision. The goal is conserving and valuing Suomenlinna as a unique environment to be preserved for future generations. The contract is now estimated to last from 2020 to 2022.

The contractor for the project is the City of Helsinki construction services Stara.
