TBE vaccination recommendation expanded – Karhusaari residents are offered the vaccine free of charge

Karhusaari residents aged three and above will be offered the TBE vaccination series (vaccine against tick-borne encephalitis) in Helsinki by appointment only. The vaccines are administered at the health stations. Children aged 7 and younger are vaccinated at Itäkatu Family Centre. The appointment booking is available from 22 January 2024 onwards.

You can book the appointment by calling or messaging your health station in the Maisa service, or by calling the maternity and child health clinic, tel. +358 9 3105 5530 (weekdays 8.00–14.00).

The free-of-charge TBE vaccination series is provided to people who have a permanent address in Karhusaari or a long-term holiday apartment in the area. Going forward, the area will be covered by the national vaccination programme of the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare (THL).(Link leads to external service) The vaccine is also recommended to everyone staying in Karhusaari for an extended period of time. They must pay for the vaccine themselves.

The TBE vaccination series includes three vaccine doses. The vaccination series should start no later than at the beginning of spring so that two doses can be administered before the summer. It is recommended, that the first two doses are received whilst there is still snow on the ground.

For now, boosters for those who have received the three vaccine doses are not included in the vaccination programme.

Vaccinations for schoolchildren and students

The TBE vaccine will be administered to schoolchildren and students residing in Karhusaari by the school and student health care services. You can get vaccinated by contacting the nurse at your school or educational institution. The vaccinations are available from February onwards.

The TBE vaccine is also recommended to those spending time in Herttoniemenranta

THL has also issued vaccination recommendations for areas outside the national vaccination programme. In these areas, clients must pay for the vaccine themselves.

Areas in which the TBE vaccine is recommended:

  • Herttoniemenranta (new area included in the TBE vaccine recommendation)
  • Länsi-Herttoniemi
  • Keski-Herttoniemi–Roihupelto
  • Roihuvuori
  • Gunillanmäki–Hevossalmi, Etelä-Laajasalo
  • Jollas, Villinki

The vaccine is recommended to permanent and holiday residents of the areas listed above, as well as people often engaging in outdoor activities in the areas. If you belong in one of these groups, you need a prescription, which you can acquire by contacting your health station in Maisa or by phone. You can then buy the vaccine yourself at a pharmacy.

Private clinics also provide TBE vaccinations for a fee. The price at these clinics is roughly EUR 50–70. You can find more information on the clinics’ websites, for example.
