New northern Baana cycle path to be built in Käpylä and Oulunkylä

Roughly two kilometres of the new northern Baana (Pohjoisbaana) cycle path will be built starting in the spring. Trees will be felled across the entire area before the nesting season for Siberian flying squirrels and birds.

The sections of Pohjoisbaana between Käpylä station and Oulunkyläntie and Jokiniementie and Tulvaniitynpolku will now be constructed. The existing pedestrian and cycling path along the track will be upgraded as part of the Baana network. Red asphalt on the cycle path and normal asphalt on the pavements

Pohjoisbaana will be a continuation of the Baana path already built in the southern end and will later continue north all the way to the Vantaa border.

Prior to the construction of the cycle path, trees will be removed to allow for improvements to the existing path structures and drainage. Specialists from the Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY) have performed tree-specific checks to ensure that the removal of the trees will not impair the migration and living conditions of the Siberian flying squirrel. New trees will be planted in the open areas. The trees to be felled will be inspected before the work starts. As a rule, trees are felled between 7.00 and 17.00.

Where possible, existing vegetation will be spared. The new vegetation to be planted will be diverse and beneficial for pollinators and birds. Street greenery consists of woody and herbaceous plantings and vines. New deciduous and coniferous trees will be planted in the green areas.

Construction of the Baana network is progressing

Pohjoisbaana will be built in sections. When completed, the link will run east of the railway line between Käpylä and the Vantaa border, connecting Oulunkylä, Pukinmäki, Malmi, Tapanila and Puistola. So far, the section between Hakamäentie and Käpylä has been built.

Helsinki’s Baanas are cycling routes of the highest quality. They allow for smooth and steady cycling between the city centre, residential areas and key workplace areas. In the future, the Baanas will form a coherent regional network of cycle paths in Helsinki that will extend roughly 140 kilometres.
