Hakaniemenranta as an area
Hakaniemenranta will be undergoing a major overhaul over the next ten years.
New homes, a hotel and new public seaside areas will be built in the area. There will be space for relaxation on the waterfront and brick and mortar premises for commercial services.
From 2027 onwards, the Crown Bridges light rail service will connect Laajasalo, Korkeasaari and Kalasatama to Hakaniemi. New tram stops will be built in front of Merihaka in Hakaniemenranta. At the same time, the Crown Bridges connection will create a new seaside route for cyclists and pedestrians. Routes on the bridge will be opened for pedestrians and cyclists even before the Crown Bridges light rail service is opened.
Hakaniemenranta will be home to around 1,200 new residents and a hotel. The Siltavuorensalmi waterfront area (the Signe Brander terrace, Merihaanpuisto Park, Kirjanpuisto Park and Pohjoisranta Harbour) will provide new space for activities by the water and brick and mortar premises for commercial services.
The Kotisatama area along the northern shore will be developed, in particular as a scheduled boat service area, and will also include key maritime activities and a new public park and beach for residents.

  Construction
Construction work on the Crown Bridges project in Hakaniemenranta will be completed towards the end of 2025, but preconstruction in the area will continue until spring 2027. Preconstruction will begin with the construction of a bored pile wall on John Stenbergin ranta. A bored pile wall must be built before dredging and filling work can be carried out next to it.
Estimated timetable for the construction of infrastructure in Hakaniemenranta.
Construction of Merihaanpuisto Park is scheduled to start in 2027 and continue until 2028. In late 2025, Merihaanpuisto Park will be temporarily landscaped by the Crown Bridges project.
The Signe Brander terrace and the plaza between it and Merihaanpuisto Park can only be finished once the construction work on the adjacent plots has been completed, as the area is needed as a storage and base area for the construction sites.
Similarly, Näkinkulku and Näkinaukio Square will be completed when the construction of the adjacent residential block is finished, estimated to be in the early 2030s.
The park planning for Kirjanpuisto Park south of Siltavuorensalmi will start by 2026 at the latest. The construction of the park is estimated to take place from the late 2020s to the early 2030s and will require sea filling.
The Pohjoisranta Harbour detailed plan is under preparation and construction is scheduled for the 2030s.

Construction of the hotel (plot 11208/1) could start in spring 2027, and construction on the first residential block (plot 11209) on the western side of Hakaniemensilta bridge could start in early 2028 at the latest, allowing the first new residents to move into the area in summer 2029. The aim is to have all the residential blocks completed by the mid-2030s.
The waterfront blocks will be subjected to quality competitions for developers for freely funded, unregulated housing production. The aim is to reserve half of the large block between Näkinaukio Square and Hakaniemenranta for unregulated owner-occupied housing and half for state-subsidised rental housing.

Plans and detailed plans
Detailed plans determine the land use of an area, i.e. where housing, offices, parks, streets and other routes are built.
Transport connections
The new bridge connections and denser city structure will emphasise Hakaniemi's position as a major public transport hub. The Crown Bridges Light Rail connection will complement Hakaniemi's position as a key part of the Helsinki city centre.

Services
Hakaniemenranta will be supported by services in the Hakaniemi area, but the buildings will also include commercial space for specialised shops, cafés and restaurants. With the Crown Bridges connection, the services of Nihti in Kalasatama will also be easily accessible.
