The maintenance and development plan will take into account, among other things:
- the outdoor museum and other unique historical values of the island
- natural assets, the area’s valuable characteristics and sustainable solutions
- the coordination of forest management and the maintenance of recreational areas
- the needs of the area’s users
- the development of tourism and recreation
- the objectives for the maintenance of public areas.
In addition to this, the updating of the plan will involve assessing the implementation of the previous plan, which was prepared in 2006, and the prioritisation of projects.
While developing Seurasaari as a unique outdoor museum that is open to all, more attention will be paid to the area's natural assets and forest management objectives, in addition to which preparations will be made for the coordination of the new nature reserve proposed for Seurasaari in the nature conservation programme and recreational use.
The plan will be prepared with the participation of associations and actors operating in the Seurasaari area, coordinating the needs and objectives of the museum area, the City's recreational areas and the associations.
The planning process will also involve preparing preliminary plans and objectives for the most notable maintenance and development needs identified in the plan, based on which Seurasaari will be developed in the coming years.
During the summer of 2025, the project carried out an initial information survey of a number of associations and actors operating on Seurasaari. The survey, along with interviews with actors and on-site visits, will serve as the basis for a draft proposal on future developments and maintenance objectives.
Once the drafts have been completed, the preliminary plans will be presented openly on Seurasaari to all residents and actors in the area. The presentation date will be confirmed during autumn 2026.
The maintenance and development plan for Seurasaari will be prepared during 2025 and 2026. The key areas for development and maintenance objectives will be selected based on feedback from residents and the area’s actors. The plan will be presented to the City of Helsinki Urban Environment Committee for approval in 2026.
