The project in brief

Käpylä Sports Park is a versatile and central sports venue that is easy to reach by different means of transport. The park features a wide variety of sports and training facilities, including ball fields, an outdoor gym and an agility course. In winter, the  park also has an ice skating rink.

The City aims to redevelop the park with the aim of making it an even more appealing place for everyday exercise and various sports. In addition to this, the aim is to enable the area to serve as a venue for major cultural and sporting events in the future.

The area will continue to be an important hub for physical activity, and its sports facilities will be refurbished and improved. The locations of the various fields and sports facilities may change as the plans are refined. In addition to this, the cycling arena, i.e. the Velodrome building, needs to be renovated. The area’s routes and parking facilities will also be redeveloped. The impacts of  climate change, such as potential flooding and scorching, will be taken into account in the planning of the park.

The City has involved a wide range of experts in sports and events in the planning of the area. Furthermore, the City will engage in active dialogue with existing sports clubs, event organisers and city residents during the planning.

Project timeline

  • General planning

We are currently preparing a master plan for the area. This involves examining what kind of functions the park should have and how it could be better used all year round. At the same time, we are planning how major cultural and sporting events could be organised in the park area.

  • Detailed plan revision (if necessary)

If major changes are planned for the area, a revision of the local detailed plan will also be launched between 2026 and 2027.

  • Park planning

Based on the master plan, we will draw up a park plan for the area, which will detail the locations of the different functions, plantings and routes. The preparation of the park plan will start after the approval of the master plan, which is estimated to take place in autumn 2026.

  • Construction

The dates for the construction of the park will be specified later.
