Käpylä Sports Park to also become a home to events

The City of Helsinki wants to develop Käpylä Sports Park into a more versatile sports and event park that not only has better sports facilities, but can also serve as a venue for major events. A master plan for the sports park is currently being drawn up. City residents can share their thoughts and ideas on how the park should be developed through an online survey and workshop.

Käpylä Sports Park is a versatile and central sports facility, and its good location between Mäkelänkatu and Messukeskus makes the area easy to reach from different parts of the city. The park currently features a wide variety of sports and training facilities, including ball fields, an outdoor gym and an agility course. In winter, the park also has an ice skating rink.

A master plan for the park is currently being drawn up with the aim of examining the development of the area and what uses it could have all year round. Käpylä Sports Park has also been identified in the City's surveys as a potential major event area.

“With Helsinki growing and densifying, we need new venues for events and event organisers to enliven the city. Käpylä could be a good option for both large and small experiences,” says Head of the City of Helsinki's Brand and Events Unit Sanna Forsström.

Although the park is being developed for event use, the area will continue to serve as an important venue for sports and exercise. The City aims to develop both the fields and everyday exercise facilities and routes of the park. The locations of the various fields and sports facilities may change as the plans are refined. At the same time, the City is planning the renovation and development of the cycling arena, i.e. the Velodrome building.

“The area is and will continue to be an important hub for sports and physical activity. We plan to renovate the fields, and at the same time we are looking into which new sports and new users could find a home in Käpylä Sports Park. The planning is being carried out in close cooperation with both the existing sports clubs in the area and other parties," says Acting Head of Sports Facilities Piritta Forsell from Helsinki Sports Services.

City residents can participate in the planning process by responding to an online survey or attending a workshop. The survey is aimed at collecting information on the use and routes of the park and ideas to support its planning. The survey will remain open until 9 November. The workshop will take place on Thursday 30 October at 17.00–19.00 in the auditorium of Mäkelänrinne Upper Secondary School.

The detailed planning of the park will continue until 2027. The master plan currently being drawn up will serve as the basis for a more detailed park plan. If the master plan proposes major changes to the area, a revision of the local detailed plan will also be launched. The dates for the construction of the park will be specified later.
