The Malmin Nova area is being developed as part of the regeneration of central Malmi and the station area. The project site is centrally located near the station, the market square and the existing shopping centre at Malminkaari 13–15.
The key aim of the project is to expand the existing shopping centre and strengthen the range of grocery retail services on offer in central Malmi. At the same time, the objective is to overhaul the parking arrangements and improve the pedestrian environment and urban space. The shopping centre extension project would involve the demolition of existing buildings and parts of buildings, as well as new construction.
Working towards clearer routes and improved services
The parking facility, office building and southern part of Malmin Nova currently located within the project area do not, from the perspective of pedestrians or customers, form an attractive or sufficiently clear environment in which to carry out business. The connections between buildings, access routes and parking facilities would also benefit from a clearer layout than at present.
The project offers an opportunity to strengthen services in the area, clarify access routes and improve connections between the southern part of Malmin Nova and the station, the market square and the surrounding urban space. At the same time, a review of how grocery shopping and other services, customer parking and pedestrian access can be organised more effectively will be conducted.
Kiinteistö Oy Helsingin Malminkaari 13–15 owns the southern part of the Malmin Nova shopping centre and has applied for a development reservation for the planning area. Planning is still at an early stage, and no final decisions have yet been made regarding the implementation of the project. The project’s impact on services, pedestrian traffic, parking, transport and the cityscape will be assessed in greater detail during the further planning and detailed plan preparation stages.
The application for a development reservation is due to be considered by the Urban Environment Committee in autumn 2026. The Economic Development Sub-committee of the City Board will then decide on the reservation. If the project goes ahead as planned, construction of the extension could begin towards the end of the decade according to estimates.
Local residents to be asked for input to support planning and decision-making
Before discussing the development reservation, the City will gather residents’ opinions and viewpoints to be considered in the planning process to support further preparation of the project and decision-making.
