The work on the adjacent street areas will be completed by the end of 2026, at which time Runeberginkatu will also be opened for vehicle traffic.
The challenging construction project was completed more than a year ahead of schedule
The health and well-being centre building is exceptional with regard to both its location and its implementation. With eight floors and two basement floors, the building has been fitted in the middle of Helsinki and its bustle, next to valuable buildings and over an active metro station and public transport tunnel.
The building was commissioned by the City of Helsinki. Project Director Tuomo Salonpää from the City appreciates the high quality of the project:
´This project is certainly one to remember. The construction site has been one of the most sensitive and challenging places in the city – and the work was completed well ahead of schedule. This speaks volumes of the power of the selected work methods and close cooperation. The work was also sped along by the solution orientation of the participants and the swift pace and high quality at which the matters which required resolving went ahead.’
The building was designed by PES-Arkkitehdit Oy. The starting point of the planning was to create an easily accessible health and well-being centre in the centre of Helsinki, which would meet the operational requirements, improve the quality of the environment and be usable for decades.

The main contractor for the project is YIT. A total of 2,019 construction professionals have worked at the site during the project. In addition to this, a wide range of experts from various fields have been responsible for the planning.

Helsinki residents will be able to use the west entrance to the metro, the ticket hall and the underground access to Kamppi shopping centre already this autumn. The project is located in a central place, which is part of its challenge. It has required a high level of versatile construction competence, as well as a seamless cooperation with all parties,’ says Project Director Jukka Niemelä from YIT.
‘The new entrance to the Kamppi metro station will improve connections and particularly improve the smoothness of transferring from the bus to the metro. The new connection is opened at a good time, as the roadworks related to the West-Helsinki Light Rail on Runeberginkatu will cause exceptional arrangements to rail traffic. We hope that the improved connection to the metro will make it easier for our customers to get around,’ says Joona Packalén, Head of Communications at HSL.
The health and well-being opens in spring 2027
The completion of the building does not mean that the services at the health and well-being centre will be available. The commissioning phase for the building will begin in October. The staff and clients will be able to use the new facilities in spring 2027, at which time the building will provide services for approximately 122,000 Helsinki residents.
The Kamppi health and wellbeing centre will host the following services, among others:
- health station
- social services for youth and adults
- physical and occupational therapy services
- basic mental health and substance abuse services
- podiatry services
- wound clinic
- service guidance for the elderly.
