Rock splitting causes occasional noise; earplugs available from holders on the construction site fences

  • Rock splitting and drilling of rock channels for municipal infrastructure pipes are being carried out on the construction site. Channels are being excavated in the rock for the pipes. The rock is not blasted, but removed by splitting. This involves drilling holes into the rock and inserting hydraulic wedges, which split the rock. The work will cause occasional noise until mid-July. Earplugs have been made available for passers-by. They can be picked up from holders attached to the construction site fences.
  • This week, earth cutting and the installation of geogrid will also be carried out on the site. Geogrid is a reinforcing mesh that distributes loads on the soil and reduces settlement of the soil layers.

Rock drilling, excavation work and changes to cycling routes

  • Asphalt and piles have been removed on the construction site. A retaining wall that previously separated the upper and lower levels of the former car park in the area has also been removed.
  • Excavation work for municipal infrastructure has begun. There will be occasional noise from rock drilling on the site for about a week.
  • The construction site will affect cycling routes. Cyclists arriving from the city centre are directed along Töölönlahdenkatu to Mannerheimintie or Alvar Aallon katu. Cyclists should not take a shortcut through Töölönlahti Park or the playground in the park, to avoid creating a hazard for children playing there.

Karamzininranta is being renovated – a place to spend time and have a stroll

The project will last until July 2027, but the seating area on the Töölönlahti side of the street will be open from 2027 onwards. The popular Töölönlahti summer park will also remain open during construction. Later in the summer, park renovations will also begin around Töölönlahti in Hesperianpuisto and Hakasalmenpuisto.

The Karamzininranta area will largely become a park-like square, respecting the prestige of the surroundings of Finlandia Hall. Going forward, Karamzininranta and the surroundings of Finlandia Hall will be more seamlessly connected to Töölönlahdenpuisto Park. Park planning is currently underway.

A significant part of the paved area of Karamzininranta will be converted into a planting area for shrubs, flowers and deciduous trees. The vegetation will be diverse, rich in species and designed to support pollinators. Between the planting areas, there will be lawns of various sizes, and benches will be placed around the edges. The street area will be equipped with litter bins, bicycle racks and a city bike station.

At the southern end of Karamzininranta, an extended footpath and cycle path will be built parallel to Töölönlahdenkatu. The alignment of the cycle path and crossing safety will be improved at the Töölönlahti end of the street.
