The cities of Helsinki and Vantaa are working together to improve recreational facilities around four ponds in Jakomäki and Vaarala. The Vaaralanlammet pond area comprising three ponds is situated in Vantaa, while Rutikka pond lies on the Helsinki side. The groundwater ponds were formed decades ago in old gravel pits near the Slåttmossen nature reserve. There are also walking trails and a dog park in the area surrounding the ponds.
Routes improved and facilities for the beach developed in the area
The ponds have long been used as unofficial swimming spots. The construction about to begin will involve the improvement of outdoor recreation facilities and groundwork for future swimming beaches. Rutikka pond and Vaaralanlampi pond will be dredged and their shore areas reshaped. Two of the ponds will be kept in their natural state.
In addition to this, park paths, lighting and underground infrastructure for beach facilities will be built on the Helsinki side. Landscaping and planting work will be carried out in the area, which will also gain a new car park and a refurbished dog enclosure. Work on the first phase is expected to be completed on 31 July 2027.
Trees have previously been removed to make way for construction, and some of the felled trees have been left in the area as deadwood. As many of the existing trees as possible will be preserved.
Construction of the maintenance buildings for the swimming beach at Rutikka pond is due to begin in 2028. The buildings will be fitted with changing rooms, as well as toilet, shower, staff and storage facilities. Accessible entry to the water’s edge will also be provided on the beach, and plans are under way for a possible winter swimming jetty. The completion date for the Vantaa beach is not yet known. In Helsinki, the official swimming beach is due to open to the public in 2029.
Jakomäki dog park to be closed during construction work
The dog enclosure and ponds in the area will be out of use at least during the first phase of construction. The nearest dog parks currently open are the Heikinlaakso dog park (Nummitie 35) in Helsinki and Rimapuisto (Maratontie 25b) in Vantaa. Both have enclosures for small and large dogs.
The construction work will cause some disruption to traffic in the area. Efforts are being made to organise alternative routes for pedestrians and cyclists. Any changes to routes will be indicated by signs. Traffic to and from the site will mainly be routed through Somerikkotie
Work generating noise and dust, such as dredging, excavation, transport and earthworks, will occasionally be carried out on the site. Work that causes disruption will generally be carried out on weekdays between 7.00 and 16.00. Any changes to working hours will be announced separately.
