Coronavirus vaccinations begin for Helsinki residents in risk groups aged 12–15

News about coronavirus vaccinations for Helsinki residents in risk groups aged 12–15.

The persons next in line for coronavirus vaccination in Helsinki are 12–15-year-olds with an illness or condition that is predisposing or highly predisposing for severe COVID-19. The booking of vaccination appointments will open tomorrow, Thursday 1 July.

Vaccination appointments can be made online at bookcovidvaccine.fi(Link leads to external service). The appointment can also be booked by calling the appointment booking number 09 310 446300 (weekdays 8–18). Underage children can book the appointment themselves. You must have turned 12 when you book the appointment. The guardian can also book an appointment for the child.

Vaccinations are being carried out at the vaccination points of Jätkäsaari, Messukeskus, Malmi and Myllypuro.

Underage persons may decide on whether or not to take the COVID-19 vaccine if a health care professional deems them capable of making the decision, based on age and developmental level. This assessment is made at the vaccination point. In the event that a young person cannot decide on the vaccination, consent from both parents/guardians is required. Consent is given with this form(Link leads to external service).

Vaccinations will proceed as more vaccine doses become available

Vaccines will be administered in Helsinki without delay as they become available. At the moment, about 390,000 Helsinki residents have received their first vaccine jab.

More than 90% of persons aged 70 and over have already received the first jab. For 45–69-year-olds, the vaccination coverage is 80% or higher. For 40–44-year-olds, the vaccination coverage is 76%. For 35–39-year-olds, the vaccination coverage is 69%. For 30–34-year-olds, the vaccination coverage is 63% and for 25–29-year-olds 56%. The vaccinations of 16–24-year-olds began last week.

“Most Helsinkians can now book vaccination appointments. We encourage everyone to book an appointment. It’s important to be vaccinated to prevent the spreading of infections from abroad, for example”, says Timo Lukkarinen, Medical Director of Health Stations.

“There are enough vaccines in Helsinki for the whole summer and there are appointment times available at all vaccination points”, Lukkarinen continues.

The City of Helsinki uses two different vaccines. People aged 16–64-year-old are currently being given the Pfizer vaccine. At present, people aged 65 years old and over are vaccinated with the AstraZeneca vaccine or, if they wish, the Pfizer vaccine. The selection can be made via both online and telephone appointments. The specific type of vaccine cannot be chosen at the vaccination point.

Two shots of the vaccines are administered. The Pfizer jabs will be administered at an interval of 12 weeks, in accordance with the Finnish Institute for Health and Welfare’s recommendation. The interval for AstraZeneca doses can be shortened to 8 weeks. Shortening the dose interval does not apply to Pfizer. Vaccination is free and voluntary.
