Renovation and extension of Pitäjänmäki Comprehensive School and the local daycare centre, youth centre and library

A project to renovate the main building of Pitäjänmäki Comprehensive School and build two new buildings to replace the existing extension will start in summer 2026 in Pitäjänmäki. The buildings will have around 50 % more space than at present, and the number of pupils will increase accordingly. The multi-purpose building will house the 680-pupil Pitäjänmäki Comprehensive School and Daycare Taneli with space for 224 children. Pitäjänmäki Library and Youth Centre will also continue their operations in the premises. The project is expected to be completed by the 2029 autumn semester.

The school building (Viinenkuja 6), completed in 1954, will be renovated and its architecturally valuable parts, such as the facades and the main staircase, will be preserved. The school extension built in 1991 will be demolished and replaced by a new building. In addition to this, another new building to house facilities such as a sports hall will be built on the plot. The spaces will be connected to each other by connecting corridors.

The new and renovated premises will be divided as follows:
•    Comprehensive school: new extension and four-storey section of the main building
•    Youth centre: three-storey section of the main building
•    Library and sports hall: new buildings along Viinenkuja
•    Daycare centre: building to be built on the site of the current library

Modern facilities catering to those with hearing loss

Old facilities and structures will be adapted to better meet the needs of contemporary education. The buildings will be designed to be particularly well-suited to people with hearing loss and sensory defensiveness. All classrooms will be separate, and induction loops will be installed in the buildings to support the use of hearing aids in almost all spaces. When completed, it will be one of the largest buildings in Europe with induction loops covering virtually the entire building.

The yards will be equipped with modern play and exercise equipment, small sports pitches and courts, and climbing areas. Staff and learners will be involved in the design of the yards and fixtures.

Some of the spaces will be available for reservation by residents through the Varaamo service at a later date.

Sports park activities during construction

The sports park and changing rooms next to the school will continue to operate normally throughout the project. Some of the parking spaces in the sports park may have to be reserved for use for the construction site. This should be taken into account when arriving by car.

Moving around the site during construction

The worksite will be clearly fenced. Work is mainly carried out Mondays to Fridays between 7.00  and 18.00, and may cause dust and noise pollution in the surrounding area. Information on any traffic arrangements will be provided by means of roadside signs.

Please note that worksite traffic runs along both Viinenkuja and Turkismiehentie. A section of the sports park parking area may be reserved for use for the construction site.
