Old buildings to be preserved, green space increased and new housing built

The Aurora Hospital area environment is valuable in terms of cultural history, urban landscape and garden history.

The aim of the plan is to preserve the most historically valuable buildings in the area and to allow flexibility in their use. The protection regulations concerning the oldest buildings in the area will be reviewed, and the value of buildings previously without a protection marking as part of the built cultural environment will be assessed.

The old pavilion hospital area and its buildings will be protected, and their use will be converted to allow for different types of uses. Newer buildings of value will be given a lighter protection marking. The demolition of two buildings and one wing is under consideration.

The area contains valuable natural sites and its landscape is important to the identity of Helsinki. The aim is to make the area an attractive and beautiful environment that will expand the recreational network for Helsinki residents. The park area will be expanded when a new park is built in the area. At the same time, the pedestrian routes in Länsi-Pasila will be expanded. More trees will be planted to improve the canopy cover and provide the connectivity needed by Siberian flying squirrels.

The aim is to provide around 15,000–20,000 square metres of floor area for new housing or special housing in the form of new construction and around 10,000 square metres of floor area converted to residential or other uses. New apartment buildings are planned along Palkkatilankatu.

The aim of the traffic planning in the area is to provide drop-off, service and rescue routes for all buildings flowing from outside the area, with traffic to the blocks and plots being fed from the outer edges of the area. The central part of the area is to be preserved as a green pedestrian environment.
