New construction project to replace the Puistola school, kindergarten, playground and sports hall

We are constructing a new building in Puistola to house Puistola Comprehensive School (Puistolan peruskoulu) and the local daycare centre, playground and sports hall. The construction work was preceded by the demolition of the old school and sports hall. The construction project also includes improving streets near the school plot and the street and parking areas of the adjacent Puistola Sports Park.

The new building will replace the now demolished premises of Puistola Comprehensive School and Puistola Sports Hall (Koudantie 2), the premises of Nurkka Daycare Centre and Nurkka Playground (Nurkkatie 2) and the temporary premises of Aurinkometsä Daycare Centre (Tenavatie 2). The new premises will solve the health and safety related risks of the old building that were due to the high level of groundwater. The project will also improve the traffic and safety on the site.

The building will provide facilities for 650 pupils and 224 children in daycare as well as the playground, which will also serve as a space for after-school activities.

The new sports hall will serve the districts of Puistola, Pukinmäki, Suutarila and Malmi. It will offer the residents of these districts access to larger and more versatile exercise facilities.

The new building has been designed in a way that allows some of the facilities to be used outside school hours by clubs, residents and local communities.

The safety and usability of the streets surrounding the plot of the new building, namely Koudantie, Koudanpolku and Karjuniitynkuja, as well as the street and parking areas of Puistola Sports Park will be improved.

New premises aimed to be in use by the beginning of 2028

The demolition of the old building was completed in August 2025. In autumn 2025, site preparation work was carried out on the site, consisting of filling and stabilisation of the site, as well as piling. The new building will be constructed at Koudantie 2.

Construction of the new premises started at the beginning of 2026. The aim is to complete the new building and the street improvements by the end of 2027, with the school, kindergarten, playground and sports hall starting their operations in the new building in January 2028.

The project implementation timetable has been sped up through the following measures:

  • The funding was programmed to be used earlier.
  • The procurement of the contractor was accelerated.
  • Management contracting was chosen as the contract type.
  • Soil surveys were brought forward.
  • The permit for deviating from the local detailed plan and building permits were obtained without delay.

The contractor for the new building project is Fira Rakennus Oy.

Work on the plot and yard

Following the project planning phase, the measures for the plot and yard were refined in spring 2025 through studies and implementation planning carried out during the demolition project.

Due to the filling and earthworks carried out on the site and the positioning of the new building, most of the existing trees had to be removed. A few old trees were spared. To prevent moisture damage caused by groundwater and perched water, the new building will be constructed approximately two metres above the level of the old building that was demolished. Due to the raised ground level, the required distance between the stormwater drainage line and water pipe running through the plot, as well as the comprehensive school's playing field, not all of the existing trees had the potential to thrive. This was also the case for the pine trees next to the sports park.

In the new construction project, new trees and shrubs will be planted on the site, ensuring good and long-lasting conditions for tree growth. Compared to the previous situation, where most of the trees were concentrated along the Koudantie and Koudanpolku streets, greenery will spread more evenly across the entire plot in the future. The final result for both the street and the yard will be green and pleasant, as the plants have been designed to support the functionality and safety of the school yards and play areas, as well as pick-up and drop-off traffic.

Street renewal as a separate project

The street project will improve the safety and flow of traffic around the new building: Pedestrian lanes will be upgraded, junctions raised and pick-up/drop-off arrangements improved. The sports park's parking areas and paths will also be renovated. In addition to this, street lighting will be replaced and improved.

The streets have been designed not only to fit into their redeveloping environment, but also to meet requirements concerning functionality, safety and pleasantness.

The contractor for the street project will be selected as the project progresses. Street construction will start in autumn 2026 and be completed in late 2027

Temporary facilities for the school in Suuntimopuisto Park

From January 2025, Puistola Comprehensive School has moved to temporary premises at Suuntimotie 28. The kindergarten and the playground moving into the new building will operate in their current premises until the new premises are completed.

Operations of the sports park and outdoor fields

There are no temporary facilities for Puistola Sports Hall during the demolition and construction projects. Instead, efforts have been made to move the exercise and sports turn bookings to other sports facilities. The operations of the outdoor sports fields in the sports park are expected to remain unchanged during the demolition and new construction projects. A temporary pavilion has been built on the southern edge of the sports park for this purpose, housing the changing rooms, toilets and maintenance facilities for the outdoor courts.

Getting around the area

The worksite area is fenced. The work is mainly carried out between 7 am and 6 pm on weekdays, and they may cause dust and noise nuisance in the surrounding area. Information on any possible traffic diversions will be provided with roadside signs.

It is worth noting that the former parking area of the demolished school and sports hall building is now a construction site, meaning that there is a limited number of parking spaces available near the sports fields.
