The restoration of Tukholmanpuisto Park will begin

The City of Helsinki will start the construction of Tukholmanpuisto Park in the Meilahti district at the turn of January–February. The small park near the intersection of Tukholmankatu and Pihlajatie will be restored in accordance with the original plan.

Tukholmanpuisto Park is a section of a two-part park, the other part being Rosina Heikel Park opposite to Tukholmanpuisto. Both the parks have been designed with Bengt Schalin as the city gardener of Helsinki (1946–1957). The parks are developed parks valuable in terms of the cityscape, landscape and architecture as well as culturally and historically.

The park will be restored with respect for the spirit of its era

In connection with the restoration work, the park’s green overall appearance and trees in good condition will be preserved in accordance with the approved park plan. At the same time, a large number of plants will be added to the park.

The park’s pathways will also be renewed and they will meet basic accessibility requirements. A square will be established at the heart of the park, and Into Saxelin’s sculpture ´The Surprise´ will be moved to act as the central theme of the square. A square will also be built on the western side of the park, where the city bike station will be located. The squares and pathways will be paved with slates in accordance with the spirits of their era. In addition, a pergola with lighting and benches will be built in the park.

In connection with the restoration, trees will be felled from the park in accordance with the park plan approved in 2019. A biologist has inspected the birch trees to be felled last autumn. Trees growing in the park that look outwardly unwell will also be inspected. If the condition of these trees is so poor that they would have to be felled within about ten years, new trees will be planted already at this point.

“Tukholmanpuisto Park – like the opposite Rosina Heikel Park – will become a small park gem in its area. A plenty of plants have been planted in the parks, with the idea of continuous flowering according to Bengt Schalin’s design principles,” says Tea Karjalainen , project manager from the Urban Environment Division.

The restoration of the opposite park will soon be complete – more trees were saved than planned

The restoration of Rosina Heikel Park is already well underway, and construction will continue in the spring when the weather permits. More old trees could be saved than planned. The pathway lines of the park were also modified from the planned due to trees and rock.

Both Tukholmanpuisto Park and Rosina Heikel Park are expected to be completed by the end of the year at the latest.
