The aim of the redevelopment of the Ramsaynranta, Pikkuniementie and Kuusisaarentie street connection is to find solutions that improve the overall quality and functionality of the street from the perspective of different modes of transport. In addition to this, the aim is to improve the quality of the existing cycle path, turning it into a high-quality main cycling route, i.e. Baana, while also improving conditions for pedestrians. The current walking and cycling conditions do not meet the quality level required by the number of users. The route feels unsafe due to insufficient space, particularly for pedestrians. There is also room for improvement in the safety of existing street intersections. At the same time, the aim is to improve the pleasantness of the area and offer more opportunities for people to spend time there, for example by installing benches.
The total length of the planning area is about three kilometres. The City is considering different solutions for different sections, such as a two-way cycle path and one-way cycle paths on either side of the street. Furthermore, the planning work has included looking into increasing the space available for cycling and walking along the route, improving the functionality and safety of the junctions, and the possibility of widening the bridges. The planning process takes into account the cultural and historical values of the area, its proximity to the sea and its greenery.
The survey is open and a discussion event will take place on 26 August
The City is encouraging its residents to share their opinions on the plan options and preliminary plans through a map survey. The survey will be open until 31 August.(Link leads to external service)
A discussion event and bike ride related to the planning will take place on Tuesday, 26 August. The discussion event will take place at 16:30–18:00 at Munkkiniemi Library, located at Riihitie 2. The event will include presentations of the draft general plans and two different plan solutions.
The event will be followed by a bike ride through the planning area, together with the planners. The ride will start at 18:15 in front of the main entrance of Munkkiniemi Library and end in Lehtisaari by 19:30 at the latest. The ride will involve stopping in a few places along the route to discuss the locations being planned. Attendees will have to bring their own bikes.
The plan bike ride includes three stops, which you can also reach on foot to join in the discussion. The stops and their estimated times are as follows:
- 18:20–18:40 Munkkiniemi: Pikkuniementie junction area near Kuusisaarensalmensilta bridge
- 18:45–19:05 Kuusisaari: Kuusisaarentie and Kuusisaarenpolku junction
- 19:10–19:30 Lehtisaari: Kuusisaarentie and Lehtisaarentie junction
The general plan forms the basis for more detailed planning
The general plan currently being drawn up for Kuusisaarentie will form the basis for more detailed planning for Kuusisaari Baana and the entire street area. The City will assess the plan solutions selected for further planning in terms of their implementation costs and impacts.
The general plan is scheduled to be completed by the end of 2025. After this, the implementation planning for the street area will begin. According to preliminary estimates, road repairs could begin as early as 2027–2028.
Helsinki is planning to build a city-wide network of high-quality cycling routes called Baana routes. The Baana routes will connect the largest residential areas with the city centre and other workplace hubs, facilitating smooth and safe cycling traffic for Helsinki residents of all ages. Kuusisaari Baana will be part of this network.
