Work starts with the removal of trees and excavation work outside the tunnel at the Harbour end the week beginning on 18 August. This will cause minor traffic disruptions.
During week 35, the work area is expanded from the mouth of the tunnel towards the Harbour:
- One lane of Vuosaaren satamatie is closed from the Seilorinkatu roundabout towards the tunnel. Traffic from the Harbour to the tunnel is restricted to one lane.
- The Satamakaari ramp will be completely closed and traffic from Vuosaari through the tunnel toward Ring Road III is directed to Rahtarinkatu–Seilorinkatu–Vuosaaren satamatie. Traffic from the Harbour toward Vuosaari follows the same route in the opposite direction (Vuosaaren satamatie–Seilorinkatu–Rahtarinkatu–Satamakaari).
Traffic controls are in place until the tunnel renovation work begins. The work has no impact on traffic from Ring Road III to Vuosaari Harbour. The tunnel is in normal use during the autumn.
The tunnel will be closed to traffic in January 2026
The Vuosaari tunnel renovation work will begin on 6 January 2026, closing the tunnel to traffic. The estimated duration of the tunnel closure is around one year. During the tunnel’s closure, traffic will be directed to a detour from Ring Road III via Itäväylä, Kallvikintie and Niinisaarentie to Vuosaari Harbour. A number of improvements have now been made to the detour to facilitate traffic for the duration of the closure. Further improvement needs for the route will be investigated during the coming autumn.
Background information on the project
Vuosaari tunnel renovation project includes overhauling the technical systems of the tunnel leading to the Vuosaari Harbour in Helsinki, which have reached the end of their service life. In addition, the tunnel structures will be repaired and the drainage and fire-extinguishing water systems under the tunnel will be replaced.
Fintraffic is responsible for the Vuosaari road tunnel's renovation project and for commissioning improvement work on the alternative route. The City of Helsinki and the Uusimaa ELY Centre are responsible for planning improvements to the alternative route.
