The construction of Stansvikin rantakatu was suspended in 2023 due to the discovery of a seasonally dry streamlet in the area. The City of Helsinki has updated its plans to ensure that the streamlet, protected by the Water Act, is preserved.
Stansvik Beach becomes an accessible beach
The new plans make it possible to build a new accessible beach in Stansvikinranta and to ensure the preservation of the streamlet in the area. The beach is designed to be as accessible as possible within the constraints of the elevation differences, woods to be preserved, sea level variations, and traffic arrangements.
The new plan draft takes into account the presence of the natural seasonally dry streamlet in the area by, for example, relocating the beach access routes and the maintenance building to the west of the streamlet. The service building will be considerably smaller than previously planned.
The streamlet will remain in its natural state. The shoreline by the streamlet will still be a reed bed, and a duckboard-like connection will be built over it.The coastal forest will be preserved almost in its entirety, and it will be protected from people walking in it by building new paths to the south and north of the forest.
An accessible concrete path will be built on the south side of the forest, which will also serve as a rescue route to the beach. The sandy area of the beach will be built by filling in sand in a place where the beach was already pre-built in 2019 by dredging and sand filling, among other measures.
Place for a kiosk or café
Plans for Huttuvadinpuisto, west of the beach, have also been changed: a café or kiosk will be built in the existing area which has an aggregate surface, and the area will have lounge chairs, a grassy picnic area, plants, a bike parking area, and a beach volleyball court.
There is a shared parking area for the beach and the nearby sports hall. It will be built next to the sports hall.
Stansvikin rantakatu to become a pedestrian and cycling route
In the new plans, Stansvikin rantakatu will be built as a pedestrian and cycling route along Stansvikinranta. This link can be made to be significantly narrower than the road previously designed for motor traffic. As a result, more trees will be retained in the street area than previously planned. The pedestrian and cycling connection is planned to continue to Stansvik Manor.
Street and park plan open for consultation until 31 August
The drafts of the Stansvikinranta and Huttuvadinpuisto park plan and the Stansvikin rantakatu street plan can be viewed from 13 to 31 August 2025 at www.hel.fi/suunnitelmat (in Finnish, under ‘Street and park plans’).
The Urban Environment Committee will discuss the new plans during autumn 2025. The land-use plan for the nearby Stansvikinkallio area is also partly under review.
In spring 2025, construction of the new Kruunuvuoren Helmi multi-purpose building started near Stansvikinranta. In addition to the school, the building will house a youth centre, a daycare centre, and playground facilities.
