Metro stop at Central Railway Station to be closed through summer for renovation

The Central Railway Station stop of the Helsinki metropolitan area’s Metro line will be closed from the beginning of June to early September, as one of several renovation and maintenance projects planned for public transportation services in 2024. Comprehensive replacement transport options are being planned to assist passengers during the coming service interruptions.

Helsinki Region Transport (HSL) has announced several projects that will affect the metropolitan area’s public transportation services in 2024. The planned renovation and maintenance work to be carried out by Metropolitan Area Transport Ltd is necessary to keep the systems up and running and ensure smoother public transport services in the future.

The largest single issue affecting Metro services in 2024 is the improvement of fire safety and other planned refurbishments at the Central Railway Station Metro stop in the city centre.

Due to the work, the Central Railway Station stop will be closed, and no metro trains will serve the station between 3 June and 1 September. The Metro will continue to run eastwards between the University of Helsinki and stops in eastern Helsinki and westwards between Kamppi and stops along the line towards Kivenlahti. The section between the University of Helsinki and Kamppi stops will be served only by trams during the closure, so HSL will make arrangements to run additional tram services to assist passengers.

Changes also scheduled to metro services to and from Mellunmäki

In eastern Helsinki, the Metro will also not run to its Mellunmäki stop between 3 June and 8 September. Those Metro trains that would normally run to Mellunmäki will terminate at Itäkeskus, Myllypuro or Kontula, depending on how the construction and refurbishment work progresses. Replacement buses will run either between Itäkeskus–Mellunmäki or Kontula–Mellunmäki, depending on how the Metro is able to operate.

The special arrangements in eastern Helsinki will be caused by the construction of a metro bridge at the Mellunmäki metro station and the renovation of a platform at the Kontula metro station, as well as switch maintenance and bridge renovation work along the line.

This means that in 2024, certain Metro stations will be closed for the following periods: Central Railway Station: 3 June to 1 September, Mellunmäki: 3 June to 8 September, Kontula: 24 June to 4 August and Myllypuro: 8 July to 4 August.

Replacement services and additional tram services

During the construction projects, replacement services will be made available in eastern Helsinki and additional tram services will be arranged to transport passengers between the University of Helsinki and Kamppi metro stops.

Mannerheimintie renovation project diverts tram routes

Renovation of one of Helsinki’s main thoroughfares, Mannerheimintie, will continue in 2024, meaning that the current diversions to tram routes will continue. HSL will prepare new tram route diversions near the Opera House during the summer and fall, as the Mannerheimintie construction site work progresses and moves to concentrate on the stretch of road between the streets of Helsinginkatu and Reijolankatu.

Changes to rail services on the Coastal Railway, Main Line and Ring Rail Line

Starting 24 June there will be a five-week interruption in westbound rail services from the railway station of Leppävaara. The services will be replaced by buses. Additionally, there will be occasional disruptions to rail services between the Leppävaara station and the destinations of Kirkkonummi and Siuntio. The disruptions will last for 1–2 days at a time and take place on weekends in May and September. These interrupted services, caused by the construction of the Espoo City Rail Link, will also be replaced by buses.

On the Main Line, a reduced service will operate from 2 April to 26 October due to switch maintenance work carried out in the area around the district of Tikkurila. This work will mainly affect the K commuter trains. More information on changes to local rail services will be provided in the near future.

Information on traffic disruptions and replacement services can be found on Helsinki Region Transport 's (HSL) website hsl.fi(Link leads to external service) (Link leads to external service) and in the HSL app (Link leads to external service)(Link leads to external service).
