Health care and social welfare messages and letters now in digital format

As of 14 April 2026, you will receive messages and letters from the City of Helsinki’s health and social services digitally not only in Maisa, but also in Suomi.fi Messages. Paper mail from authorities will remain an option for everyone.

If you use the  Maisa client portal(Link leads to external service), you will receive all messages and letters related to your care and services digitally in Maisa. From 14 April 2026 onwards, Finnish residents will start receiving official mail primarily electronically, which means you will also receive them in Suomi.fi Messages, and they will no longer be sent to you by paper mail unless you specifically request it.

City of Helsinki health care and social welfare services will send the following types of messages to you via Maisa and Suomi.fi

  • decisions on home care, disability services, client fees, service vouchers and supplementary and preventive social assistance
  • appointment letters for doctor’s appointments, and similar
  • summaries of appointments.

The messages you send to professionals and the replies you receive will remain solely in Maisa. You will continue to receive appointment reminders for health care and social welfare services, as well as weekly and monthly home care newsletters and programmes, for example, by SMS, email or Maisa app notification. You will continue to receive your invoices either in your online banking service or by post, according to your preference.

Who is not affected by the change?

The amendment does not apply to minors or to persons who are subject to guardianship or have a valid power of attorney. It also does not apply to customers who have never used digital services.

If you cannot or do not want to use digital services, you can continue to receive official mail in paper format by separate request. Custody decisions issued by child welfare services will continue to be delivered by registered post.

What to do if you want to continue receiving letters by mail

If you have never used digital services, you do not have to do anything. You will continue to receive paper mail.

If you have previously used digital services but wish to receive future messages and letters related to your care and services by paper mail, please follow the instructions below:

  • turn on the Posti (mail) option in Maisa and do not enable other electronic mailboxes (Suomi.fi Messages, Omaposti, Kivra)
  • When filling in an application in Managing your Social Care Services section in Maisa, choose Ei (No) in section Hyväksyn sähköisen tiedoksiannon (I consent to electronic reply).
  • indicate at your appointment that you wish to receive paper mail.

If you want to stop using Suomi.fi Messages, do so in the Suomi.fi Messages settings. You will then receive your messages by paper mail again. The choice is valid for 365 days at a time. Going forward, you will need to renew your paper mail selection every year.
