This year, the City of Helsinki is once again offering approximately 3,500 summer and seasonal jobs and substitute positions in the City's various divisions. Many of the City’s summer jobs do not require previous work experience – studies in the relevant field and a willingness to learn are more important.
Summer employees are hired for the care industry, as planning interns, for kitchen work, for various office and customer service duties, and as children’s and young people’s hobby and camp activity instructors, etc. Additionally, Stara seeks gardeners and park workers for seasonal work between April and October, for example. We are particularly looking for students and professionals in relevant fields to work in the Social Services, Health Care and Rescue Services Division and the Urban Environment Division.
The application period for summer jobs is now open, with new jobs posted on a weekly basis.
Jobs available for underage residents as well
Approximately one thousand of the City’s summer jobs are intended for young people.
"We want to make sure that young people who lack work experience or need support to find a job have a chance to get familiarised with the world of work. Your first summer or seasonal job can be an important step towards your own study and career path,” says the City of Helsinki’s HR Director Petri Lumijärvi.
The City has more than 700 summer jobs available for people under the age of 18. Additionally, the Siisti kesä! (‘Tidy Summer!’) project offers nearly 300 summer jobs for 16–20-year-olds. The application period for these jobs starts on 23 February and ends on 9 March at 16.00.
The City’s summer jobs for young people can be applied for by all young people who have completed comprehensive school and not turned 18 by the start of the summer job. The City of Helsinki also offers summer jobs for young people who have support needs in terms of employment.
The City is also hiring young people who do not yet have work experience for the Siisti kesä! project. Employees hired as part of the project help keep parks, squares, kerbsides, sports facilities and public beaches tidy.
There are also team leader positions available in the Siisti kesä! project for those interested in developing managerial skills. You can apply for a team leader position after turning 18. The position involves supervising the work of younger summer employees, and having a driving licence and being able to drive team members to different locations is considered an advantage for team leader positions.
The City’s summer jobs are very popular
The summer jobs offered by the City of Helsinki are very popular, and a large number of applicants is expected this year as well.
In previous years, the most popular summer jobs have been positions in early childhood education, libraries and outdoor swimming pools, as well as environmental worker, construction trainee, sanitation worker and assistant youth instructor positions. Every year, the Social Services, Health Care and Rescue Services Division also looks for hundreds of summer substitutes, especially for practical nurse, nurse and public health nurse positions.
“Every year, we collect feedback from summer employees to help us improve the summer job experience. Last year, respondents were particularly satisfied with the good atmosphere and equal treatment at workplaces. Summer employees felt that they were accepted as part of the work community and that help was always available when needed. We are particularly pleased that as many as 94% of summer employees would recommend their summer job to a friend,” says Lumijärvi.
You can apply for summer jobs in Helsinki through the City’s recruitment system at helsinkirekry.fi. The application period is specified separately for each job. New jobs will be posted almost weekly, so we recommend keeping an active eye on the website. You can also save your searches for open jobs to keep you notified of new vacancies.
