The start of the popular walking tours is always a sure sign of spring. The tours offer a chance to discover the Art Nouveau architecture of Katajanokka, Helsinki’s LGBTQ+ history or local ghost stories and mysteries. The first guided walking tour of the spring starts on Thursday, 16 April at 70.00 from the City Museum (Aleksanterinkatu 16) and ends at Luotsikatu at 18.30, taking participants to the Art Nouveau sites of Katajanokka. Tickets (€13) are recommended to purchase in advance.
The Unknown Suburb exhibition challenges perceptions
A highlight of the spring at the City Museum is the opening of the new exhibition Unknown Suburb(Link leads to external service) on Friday, 17 April. The exhibition sheds light on the often overlooked, brighter sides of suburban life. Helsinki residents living or working in suburbs have been interviewed for the exhibition. City residents’ personal photos of suburbs are being collected for the exhibition until the end of March. Worker’s Museum and Burgher’s House Museum open their doors
As spring approaches, the Worker’s Museum(Link leads to external service) (Kirstinkuja 4) and the Burgher’s House Museum(Link leads to external service) (Kristianinkatu 12) will open their doors. In Alppila, right next to Linnanmäki, the lovely old working-class homes of the Worker’s Museum will be open again from 15 April onwards, Wednesday to Sunday 11.00–17.00. In Kruununhaka, the small yellow wooden house known as the Burgher’s House, will open its doors on Saturday, 2 May. Admission to both museums is free.
Most exciting events of the spring
Come and test your Helsinki knowledge at Linna Bar’s pub quiz in Suomenlinna on Wednesday, 29 April, 18.30–20.30. Take part solo, as a pair or in teams of four – the best teams will win prizes. New arrivals in the museum shop
City Museum’s museum shop is brimming with new spring arrivals and inspiration for Easter festivities: candles, decorations and small gift ideas. Children will also find plenty to enjoy, such as plasticine modelling clay in bright colours. The shop is open Mon-Fri 11.00–19.00 and Sat-Sun 11.00–17.00 at Aleksanterinkatu 16.
Please note: On Maundy Thursday, 2 April, the Helsinki City Museum, Villa Hakasalmi and Helsinki Tram Museum are open 11.00–17.00 and will remain closed during Easter, 3–6 April.
