The network of cycle paths has developed rapidly in recent years
In previous years, the cycling map has been published in printed form. Due to the increased speed of development of the bicycle routes in Helsinki in recent years, the decision was made to develop the cycling map as an electronic version. A printed publication would therefore not remain up to date for very long.
‘The investments in bicycle traffic are beginning to be visible in a smoother and safer traffic environment. Helsinki has around 1,200 kilometres of cycle paths, and for journeys of less than five kilometres, cycling is often the quickest way to get there. The construction of cycle paths will continue in the coming years, as around half of the target network for the inner city area and a quarter of the target network for the Baana routes have been completed so far,’ says Team Manager Oskari Kaupinmäki.
Different types of cycle routes are colour-coded on the map. The routes marked in red are the main cycle routes, those marked in pink are other cycle routes, and those marked with a dotted line are routes where cyclists ride along the driving lane. Underpasses are marked in blue.
New cycle lanes will also improve the position of pedestrians
New cycle lanes have mostly been built as part of street renovations. When a street has been dug up, for example to replace water and sewer pipes, the street layout has been reorganised at the same time. When a dedicated cycling lane is built on a street, pedestrians are also provided with their own lane. Most new cycling paths in Helsinki are one-way. However, getting used to a new kind of environment often takes some time.
‘The new cycling routes are designed to be safe, smooth and intuitive for all road users. One-way cycling lanes are marked with both signs and road markings. Lessons have been drawn from the world’s leading cycling cities. For example, turning left in busy junctions has been organised the same way as in Copenhagen, where the manoeuvre takes place in two stages. We have put up temporary guidance signs at the junctions and made a video showing how to turn,’ continues Kaupinmäki.
This is how you turn left on a bike
In addition to the regularly updated cycling map, further information on the cycling routes will be added to the
hel.fi/cycling website. The page also contains information on bicycle parking, winter maintenance, and the construction of cycle paths, for example.
