Space for new hospital to be planned in Malmi

The Malmi Hospital area will be expanded to make room for a new hospital building. The plan is to demolish the health station, school and telecommunications operator facilities currently located in the area and move these functions elsewhere in Malmi. There will also be changes to the traffic arrangements in the area. An online event will be held to discuss the starting points of the detailed plan revision on 14 March.

The City of Helsinki is planning to build a new hospital in Malmi. The existing hospital area will be expanded to make room for the new hospital building. An architectural competition on the planning of the new building is currently underway, and its outcome will be revealed in autumn 2024. The hospital expansion will require the detailed plan to be revised, as the current detailed plan does not allow for a sufficiently large new building to be built.

To allow for large-scale construction of a new building, the plan is to demolish the health station, school and telecommunications operator facilities in the area and move these functions elsewhere in Malmi. The health station facilities are to be transferred to Soidintie 3 in the centre of Malmi, where a plot is currently being planned for a family centre and a health and well-being centre. The school is to be transferred to the Malmi campus area being planned on Kirkonkyläntie. The search is still ongoing for a suitable location for the telecommunications operator facilities.

The aim is for the new building to fit in with the existing park-like cultural environment of the area. The protected buildings in Malmin kirkkopuisto park will form their own blocks. The plan is to retain the ecological corridor travelling through Laidunpuisto park and Malmin kirkkopuisto park and to secure the values, recreational use and green corridors of Malmin kirkkopuisto park. The objective of the City of Helsinki in the area is to create conditions that contribute to the recovery of patients as well as a pleasant and functional work environment for the hospital staff.

The detailed plan revision will also introduce changes to the traffic arrangements in the area. The plans include the construction of a stop of the Viikki–Malmi light rail line on Kirkonkyläntie, in front of the new hospital. Additionally, the City of Helsinki is looking to place a bus terminal in the hospital area. The plan is to move Talvelantie further north while converting the existing traffic connection within the hospital plot, at the southern edge of the area, into a street. The conditions for extending the street to Kunnantie are being looked into.

Starting points and objectives of planning to be discussed during an online event on 14 March

The participation and assessment plan for the detailed plan revision and the preparatory materials for the detailed plan will be available online at website Participate in city planning and at Malmi Library from 11 March to 2 April 2024.

The starting points and objectives of the planning process will be presented during an online event on Thursday 14 March 2024. The event will start at 17.15. The link for joining the event is available online at hel.fi/asukastilaisuudet (in Finnish). The event will also feature a segment dedicated to discussion and answering attendees’ questions.

Hospital for patients and their loved ones along smooth public transport connections

In the future, Malmi will be the second location of Helsinki Hospital. More hospital functions will be concentrated at Malmi Hospital in accordance with the 2030 hospital area vision for the Helsinki Metropolitan Area. Building a hospital along good public transport connections makes it easy for patients to arrive and go home. The aim is for the construction of the new hospital to start in 2028 and for the facilities to be opened for use around 2032–2033.

The new Malmi Hospital will be a rehabilitative hospital with a focus on geriatric acute care and rehabilitation as well as the further treatment of surgical patients. In addition to the new Malmi Hospital adding more hospital beds, the functions currently operating in Malmi Hospital’s building number 18 and roughly half of the functions of Suursuo Hospital will be transferred to the new hospital.

The new Malmi Hospital will be a hospital for patients and their loved ones. The patients’ loved ones, volunteers and third sector employees will be regarded as a resource in supporting the patients’ well-being, and the hospital will support their presence and activities in different ways.
