Please make sure that the vegetation on your plot does not extend to the street

Now is a good time to prune any excess vegetation growing on your plot and ensure that it does not compromise the safety or accessibility of the street. Property owners and holders have a duty to ensure that plants on their plots do not grow in the street area and cause nuisance.

It is a good idea to examine and prune the vegetation on your plot as part of spring yard work. However, it is best to prune sap-rich plants such as maples, birches and cherries in late summer or autumn.

Vegetation should be pruned in such a way that

  • pedestrian and cycling routes remain unobstructed and safe
  • vegetation does not extend to passageways
  • branches do not hang too low, leaving a clear height of at least 3.5 metres on pedestrian pathways and at least 5.0 metres on roadways
  • there are no visual obstructions at intersections and pedestrian crossings
  • traffic signs, other signs and lighting remain clearly visible.

Overgrown vegetation reduces safety and hinders maintenance

Unobstructed routes are essential for everyone in the city. In particular, visually impaired people, people with reduced mobility and people using assistive devices will find it significantly more difficult to move around if overgrown vegetation is allowed to narrow pathways or reduce visibility. Vegetation encroaching on the streets can create hazards. Unmanaged vegetation also hinders the movement of maintenance vehicles, making maintenance more difficult.

If a property owner or holder fails to sufficiently prune the vegetation on their plot after being notified of it, the City will take care of the work and may send an invoice to the property owner or holder for the costs incurred.

Let's work together to keep the city safe and unobstructed for everyone.
