This summer, the City of Helsinki's Sports Services and FitPit Oy are again collaborating to organise free pop-up swimming schools at the Aurinkolahti, Hietaranta and Palettilampi beaches and the Valkea talo swimming hall in Haaga. This is the second summer in a row that pop-up swimming schools are being held at Helsinki's public beaches. Most of the pop-up swim schools are intended for children of primary school age, but there are also a few groups for young people and some for women and girls only.
“These jointly organised and popular pop-up swimming schools are a continuation of our previous efforts to strengthen the swimming skills of hundreds of children in Helsinki. We want to offer swimming schools that are easily accessible, safe and inspiring at public beaches all over Helsinki in the summer – for all children,” says Head of the Guided Sports Services Unit Marjaana Risku from the City of Helsinki's Sports Services.
The cooperation between the City of Helsinki's Sports Services and FitPit Oy as regards the swimming schools has been seamless, and the two organisations’ objectives are fully aligned.
“We believe that swimming is for everyone. The purpose of this project is to inspire children and young people to take to the water in a safe and low-threshold way. Helsinki's public beaches have enormous potential as learning environments, and it is great for us to be able to continue this important cooperation in the coming summer,” says CEO of FitPit Oy Laura Obolgogiani.
The pop-up swimming schools will be held from the beginning of June until the beginning of August, in both the mornings and afternoons. This summer, all of the pop-up swimming schools consist of four 45-minute lessons. There are three levels of swimming schools: beginner, continued beginner and beginner technique. The language of instruction is Finnish.
The instruction focuses on the basics of swimming, confident water mobility and water safety. Instruction is provided in small groups by experienced swimming teachers. The participation policy for the pop-up swimming schools is that you can participate in one swimming school during the summer.
