A transfer request notice will be attached to boats which have been placed without permission, and the evential owner will have approximately one month to move their boat. After this time, the boat may be considered to be abandoned property, and the City can remove it.
If an owner appears after this time and they wish to reclaim their boat, they must provide proof of ownership and compensate for the costs from transporting and storing the boat. Queries regarding removed boats may be made by email to Kymp.alueidenvalvonta@hel.fi(Link opens default mail program) .
Broken glass fibre boats removed by the City are processed as special waste, while broken wooden boats are transported to landfill sites. If a removed boat is fit for use or has retail value, it will be stored for three months and then auctioned.
Urban space is intended for shared use
The City must monitor that unauthorised structures such as piers or terraces, or items and hobby equipment such as trampolines or basketball hoops, are not stored on public areas. This ensures that the streets, parks and squares of the city remain equally usable for everyone, and that incorrectly placed structures do not cause safety risks or prevent maintenance.
Unauthorised structures must be removed from public areas. If the owner of a structure fails to follow the request to remove it, compensations and costs related to the unauthorised use of the area may be collected afterwards.
Last year, the City paid particular attention to the unauthorised storage of sales stalls and grills on streets and squares, and in parks. Fewer stalls are now stored on the best places of the city. A total of 29 abandoned boats were removed during last spring and summer.
You can report abandoned boats and other suspected unauthorised land use via the City of Helsinki feedback system(Link leads to external service) .
