Course in Swedish about memory problems helps with everyday and emotional issues

Memory problems can cause challenges. They can also feel daunting, and it is important to get support from both professionals and peers. The memory group Hjärnstyrka (brain power), which is held at Arbis by Töölö Service Centre, offers information, peer support and guidance.

The course is designed for people with memory problems and started in February 2026. The course has 15 sessions with different themes, such as relaxation, diet and sleep, relationships and inspiring everyday life.

“We have received only positive feedback. Several participants said they enjoyed participating and would be happy to take part in similar activities in the future. They have felt confident enough to share their thoughts and felt comfortable”, says Course Leader and Social Instructor Rebecka Lehmussaari.

"It is important to get up and out of your home"

When you have memory problems, the world can easily become smaller. It is not as easy to find things to do. You might also forget some of the routines you used to have.

"A course like this activates participants. It is important to get up and out of your home. Participants have said that we do things during the course that they don’t do at home. They also meet others who have the same experiences and they can get to know new people”, says Course Leader and Social Instructor Jennica Kalland.

New cooperation between service centres and Arbis

This is the first time that the service centres have organised a course at the Swedish Adult Education Centre in Helsinki, Arbis. If participants wish, they can join support groups for memory problems at Töölö Service Centre after the course. Activities in Swedish are available at the service centres in Töölö, Koskela and Kamppi.

"During the last course session in May, we go to Töölö Service Centre together. This allows participants to familiarise themselves with the place and see what they could do in the future. In May, we take part in the spring festival, which usually has around 100 participants”, says Rebecka.

“We are currently planning future courses at Arbis. However, there are already groups and guidance on memory problems at the service centres, so if you are interested you can get in touch. The earlier you get help with memory problems, the better!” says Jennica.
