Eteläesplanadi cycle path to be made safer

The City of Helsinki will improve conditions for pedestrians and cyclists on Eteläesplanadi by separating the two modes of transport into their own lanes. A new cycle path will be built between Fabianinkatu and Korkeavuorenkatu, and the existing cycle path will be converted into a footpath.

Bicycle traffic at pedestrian crossings will be controlled by traffic lights, which will make the pedestrian crossings clearer and improve safety at junctions. This new cycle path will remain in place until the early 2030s, when a major renovation of the entire Eteläesplanadi area will begin.

As part of the cycle path construction project, some of the old road paving stones will be removed and reused in new structures. Any surplus stones will be stored for future use.

Work will begin in the last week of August and is expected to be completed by the end of October. The work will take place on weekdays between 7.00 and 22.00. Any work to be carried out at other times will be announced separately.

The site arrangements will result in temporary changes to traffic arrangements for pedestrians, cyclists and motorists alike.
