In family care for older people, the older people receive the care and support they need in their own or a family caregiver’s home, without any hurry. Familiar family caregivers reduce feelings of loneliness and insecurity among older people and support their independent living. Helsinki is currently looking for new family caregivers for older people.

“A close and warm relationship can develop between the family caregiver and their clients. In family care, there is time to stop and interact with the older client and do the things they want. You can go out for a walk, go shopping, cook food or do some exercise,” says Family Care Social Instructor Riikka Halonen.

Family caregiving is suitable for a wide range of life situations

Family caregiving is suitable for a wide range of life situations, as family caregivers work independently under a commission agreement rather than an employment contract.

“It is up to the family caregiver to decide how many clients they can take on and what kind of approach suits their own daily life. Family caregiving may be a good fit for you if you want to do meaningful work in a flexible manner or continue your career after retirement, for example,” Riikka says.

Your own home can also be surprisingly suitable for family care. The most important thing is that it is safe and functional.

“Daytime family care does not require extensive special arrangements. However, your home must be set up so that people can spend time there safely and also rest when needed.”

Family caregivers do not need to have an education in health care, as we will organise an advance training course in family care for those interested in this work in autumn 2026.

“The training will focus on themes related to family care. It’s also important to assess your own capabilities,” Riikka says.
