Performing Art Weeks take over Adult Education Centre

The performing arts groups of the Finnish Adult Education Centre will take to the stage on 17 April–7 May with performances that showcase the Adult Education Centre’s performing arts instruction. The programme will kick off with the Kuorofestarit choir festival, organised for the second time. All performances are free of charge.

The Performing Arts Weeks will start with the Kuorofestarit choir festival where sixteen choirs will delight audiences with their medleys in Opistotalo, the Finnish Adult Education Centre’s main building at Helsinginkatu 26, Kanneltalo theatre and concert hall in the Kannelmäki district, and three different Helsinki libraries on 17–21 April.

The ensembles will perform a variety of vocal music composed or adapted for choirs from various genres. The concerts will feature jazz tunes, dance music, contemporary and renaissance music as well as songs from Finland and around the world.

From classic plays to drag murder mystery

Theatre group Studionäyttämö will perform the classic expressionist play Woyzeck by Georg Büchner. Performances on 14–25 April in the Viipurinsali hall at Opistotalo, the Finnish Adult Education Centre’s main building at Helsinginkatu 26. Directed by Riku Korhonen.

Theatre group Opistoteatteri will bring to the stage the hilarious tragedy Päällystakki (The Overcoat) based on Nikolai Gogol’s short story by the same name. Performances on 20 April–8 May in the assembly hall of Opistotalo, the Finnish Adult Education Centre’s main building located at Helsinginkatu 26. Directed by Heikki Häkkä.

Theatre group Maunula-talon teatteri’s play Euroopan taivaan alla (Under the European Sky) is a bitterly topical comedy on labour mobility by Sami Keski-Vähälä and Esa Leskinen. It is a story about small people coping in the big world and about love that crosses borders on a continent where well-being has become a luxury enjoyed by few and lady luck is a fickle mistress. Performances on 25 April–9 May in Maunula House’s Metsäpurosali Hall. Directed by Jonna Wikström.

Theatre group Tunneteatteri’s spring performance Bremenin soittoniekat (Town Musicians of Bremen) is a story of friendship and desire for freedom. Theatre group Tunneteatteri is a course organised in cooperation between the Finnish Adult Education Centre and Kehitysvammatuki 57, an organisation for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities, that is celebrating its 10th anniversary this spring. Impro theatre group Pitkä Impro Helsinki’s Sattuman kauppaa (By Chance) and Tarinoita Impronuotiolta (Stories from the Improfire) by the Improvised play course are built as they go along according to audience instructions – no two performances are the same! Performances on 26 April–10 May in the assembly hall of Opistotalo, the Finnish Adult Education Centre’s main building located at Helsinginkatu 26. Directed by Hanna Lekander.

The plot thickens as the Adult Education Centre’s new drag artists take to the stage with their performance Pieni Drag-murha (Little Drag Murder). Performance on 28 April in the assembly hall of Opistotalo, the Finnish Adult Education Centre’s main building located at Helsinginkatu 26. Directed by Miika Heikkinen.

Audience sings along in the Improviisut, Improvision Song Contest

Bands will make serious noise at Maunula House on 19 and 26 April. The two-night affair will feature seven different bands, so seven different sounds.

On 7 May, Opistotalo’s assembly hall stage will be dedicated to dancers as the audience gets to enjoy a wide range of dance art in the form of dance performances and creative movement from different dance groups.

How about an improvised ballad, duet or Eurovision song? On 12 May, students will put together the Improviisut (Improvision Song Contest) together with director Hanna Lekander and musician Elisa Tan. The audience will get to sing along to the catchiest choruses!
