New apartment buildings to replace the children’s home and the Heka apartment buildings
The Heka apartment buildings around the junction of Aarteenetsijäntie and Varhelantie are planned to be demolished and replaced with new apartment buildings. A new residential construction is also being planned to replace the children's home north of Muinaistutkijantie.
The possibility of adding new buildings to the block is being explored with the private housing companies at the end of Aarteenetsijänkuja. Part of the neighbourhood would be converted into a street area to allow development of the area under the metro bridge. The goal is to diversify the local housing stock..
Mellunkylänpuro as part of a park
The plan also explores the option of opening up the piped section of the Mellunkylänpuro stream to create more park area along Länsimäentie. The new park areas would be created in the Heka neighbourhood, west of Naulakalliontie, as part of the redevelopment of its parking and yard areas and by converting existing protective green areas into parkland.
The plan also makes provision for future light rail connections through the area..
Implementer being sought for Mellunmäki centre plans
The Mellunmäki centre plan, approved last year, has now reached the stage where a competition is being held to find a developer for the plans. It aims to ensure that the future architecture and urban landscape is of high quality. The redeveloped city centre will have apartments for 800 residents, a tram terminus, shops and brick-and-mortar commercial facilities.
In addition, Kairakenttä is being renovated with the aim to have the design ready by early this year and to start construction in 2026.
