Tourism and events are a key part of Helsinki’s vitality, resident wellbeing and international appeal. They support business activity and employment, create an attractive and diverse city for both its visitors and residents, and enrich the city’s urban culture.
On 22 June, the Economic Development Sub-committee of the Helsinki City Board approved the 2026–2029 Development Programme for Helsinki Tourism and Events. The aims of the development programme are manifold: to accelerate year-round growth in tourism and events, to extend the length of stays in the city, to boost ‘Happy Helsinki’s’ international appeal, and to ensure that the city is a partner that supports growth and is a more effective destination for tourism and events.
“Helsinki enjoys a strong position, as it is a leading sustainable tourist destination and a popular host city for congresses, conferences and events. We intend to uphold this status in the future as well. Tourism in Helsinki is currently on the up, and the development programme will help us to focus our efforts even more precisely, based on data, impact and collaboration, said Nina Vesterinen, the city’s tourism director.
“Events, urban culture and a strong brand are key factors in building Helsinki’s appeal. Our aim is for Helsinki to be an event city that offers rich experiences and attracts international interest all year round," said Sanna Forsström, the city’s head of brand and events.
The objectives set out in the development programme will be sustainably promoted by creating new service offerings, expanding the range of events and making travelling to Helsinki an even smoother experience, among other things. Residents, businesses and partners will in future also participate in the development of tourism and events in a more target-oriented manner.
International marketing will be based on Helsinki’s strengths and general themes of happiness, encompassing such features as design and architecture, the unique sauna and food cultures, and the capital’s beloved maritime character. The city will be stepping up its efforts to attract major international events, congresses and conferences, and in collaboration with various stakeholders, will be investing in the development of the capital’s event venues and locations.
“The aim is for growth in tourism and events to benefit both the local economy and Helsinki’s residents. Promoting tourism and events all year round plays a crucial role in this. Longer stays by tourists also reduce the relative environmental impact and enable a more varied and high-quality experience for visitors to the city,” said Vesterinen.
The Development Programme for Tourism and Events contributes to the implementation of the 2025–2029 Helsinki City Strategy and forms part of a wider initiative aimed at strengthening the city’s activity, vitality, skills and growth.
