What can you experience on the southern platform of the Lammassaari duckboard trail?
Admire the views from the platform. Viewing is possible even from a low height, as one of the walls is made of glass.
Habitat maintenance
The southern platform of the plank trail offers a direct view of the open meadow in front of it. Migratory wading birds arrive at the meadow in spring and autumn in large numbers. If you have precise optics, you can spot, for example, jack snipes in the bay. Lapwings, redshanks and yellow wagtails nest on the meadow. During the grazing season, you can see cows and sheep who maintain the bird waters on food wages. The extension of the Lammassaari pasture remains low-growing, because the reeds are cut with a mower in late summer.
Nature observations along the plank trail
In the wooded section along the plank trail of Lammassaari, you can hear the song of the nightingale in the summer. The whitethroat sings its hissing song among the meadowsweet. You can see stock doves flying above the viewing platform. The stock dove nests both on Lammassaari and on Kuusiluoto, and its song can be heard as late as in August. At the end of May, the beautiful white cuckooflower adorns the sides of the plank trail.
Arrival at the southern platform of the Lammassaari duckboard trail
You can reach the Lammassaari plank path and viewing platforms along it from the Vanhankaupunginkoski rapids or along the Matinkaari bridge. Bus stops are at Viikintie 1 and Hämeentie 159. A parking space for cars is at the junction of the Jokisuuntie and Katariina Saksilaisen katu roads (Katariina Saksilaisen katu 11 and Jokisuuntie 13). There is an accessible dry toilet next to the parking lot. The plank trail to Lammassaari starts at the southern part of Pornaistenniemi, and the route is marked.
