The Kivinokka and Puotila beaches have been popular, and due to the high number of visitors, the beaches will be staffed with lifeguards for the first time this summer. The Palettilampi beach, which opened last summer, will be open throughout the swimming season. Palettilampi is an artificial pond that receives its water from Lake Päijänne. The water in the pond renews regularly.
The quality of the water at the beaches along the Vantaa River has been observed to temporarily decline during heavy rain due to surface runoff and stormwater. Rains over the catchment area of the Vantaa River affect the water quality of the beaches along the river for 2–3 days on average. There have been swimming restrictions at the beaches of the Vantaa River for the past three summers.
The water quality of beaches to be regularly monitored
There are 26 public beaches in Helsinki this summer. The City will regularly sample the water at the beaches during the summer and monitor the hygienic quality of the water by identifying faecal bacteria in the water samples. In addition to this, the City will measure water temperatures and monitor the amounts of blue-green algae at the beaches.
The City of Helsinki will be carrying out intensified monitoring at beaches where stormwater may affect the hygienic quality of the water. Intensified sampling will be carried out at the beaches of Marjaniemi, Pikkukoski, Rastila, Iso Kallahti, Aurinkolahti, Hietaranta and Lauttasaari over the summer of 2025.
Lifeguards on duty at beaches from 2 June to 10 August
Lifeguards will be on duty at Helsinki’s major public beaches, including Puotila and Kivinokka beaches for the first time this summer.
Despite the presence of the lifeguards, children are always under the responsibility of their guardians at the beaches. When arriving at the beach, it is advisable to consult the beach information board and follow its instructions. The lifeguards will provide guidance and help if needed. The latest water quality results can be found on the renewed noticeboards at the beaches and the ulkoliikunta.fi website.
Non-motorised water traffic routes have also been designated along the edges of the beaches where lifeguards are on duty. People can land on these beaches with SUP boards, rowing boats, kayaks, etc.
