Environmental noise is one of the most notable threats to health and comfort in European urban environments. Long-term exposure to noise may reduce the quality of life, disrupt sleep and increase health risks, making noise management a key element in sustainable city planning.
The traffic noise study covers the different modes of transport, such as road traffic on main and collector streets, railway traffic and tram traffic in Helsinki and Espoo. The study also includes the above-ground section of the Helsinki metro. The study will identify areas where noise levels exceed the guideline values and estimate how many residents are exposed to noise.
The noise calculation will apply the joint European CNOSSOS-EU model. A national noise mapping study, applying Nordic calculation models, will supplement the European model. The results will be used to draw up up-to-date noise maps and update the cities' noise abatement action plans. The results of the study will support city planning, traffic development and decision-making to proactively prevent noise pollution.
Once the study is completed, the results and the noise maps based on them will be published on the cities' own websites.
The study is a collaborative effort between the cities of Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen and the Finnish Transport Infrastructure Agency. Sitowise Oy will implement the study, due to be completed in 2027.
