Public authorities begin primarily sending digital mail – City of Helsinki joining in stages

The legislation requiring public authorities to switch to using primarily digital mail has entered into force. This means that you will primarily receive mail from public authorities in the Suomi.fi Messages service. The Suomi.fi Messages service will be automatically activated for you if you use the e-services of any public authority.

The City of Helsinki will start using Suomi.fi Messages in stages. At present, the service is used by the Helsinki Employment Services and Health and Social services.

We send mail from public authorities to municipal residents through various digital channels, but also by post and email.

What is Suomi.fi Messages?

Suomi.fi Messages is a secure digital messaging service used by public authorities in Finland. You will receive letters, decisions and invoices from different public authorities in your Suomi.fi Messages inbox. You can read these messages at Suomi.fi/messages or by downloading the Suomi.fi mobile application.

Who is Suomi.fi Messages for?

Suomi.fi Messages is intended for adult persons who use strong identification, meaning online banking credentials or a mobile certificate, to log in to the e-services of public authorities.

The City of Helsinki and Suomi.fi Messages

If you are a client of the Helsinki Employment Services or Health and Social services and you have activated Suomi.fi Messages, you will receive decisions concerning you in Suomi.fi Messages.

The services of other City of Helsinki divisions will switch to using Suomi.fi Messages according to service-specific timetables. The divisions will communicate about the changes to their customers when they are relevant.

Examples of Employment Services' decisions that are notified via Suomi.fi Messages

  • requests for clarification or hearings related to unemployment security matters
  • information about mandatory meetings or contact requests
  • selection decisions for labour market training
  • decisions related to the payment of unemployment benefits.

Examples of letters from Health and Social services that are sent to Maisa and Suomi.fi Messages

  • decisions on home care, disability services, client fees, service vouchers, supplementary or preventive social assistance, for example
  • appointment letters for doctor's appointments at health stations, for example
  • summaries of clinic visits.

Please note that the change in the legislation and the use of Suomi.fi Messages applies to decisions issued by the City of Helsinki, not to all customer communication. In other words, you will continue to receive appointment reminders from health care and social welfare services by SMS, email or notification in the Maisa app, for example.

What do I need to do?

If you have already activated Suomi.fi Messages, you do not need to do anything.

If you have not activated Suomi.fi Messages, you will be prompted to activate it when you log in to an e-service provided by the central government, a municipality or a wellbeing services county. If you give your consent, you will in future receive messages from different public authorities in Suomi.fi Messages.

Be sure to check your Suomi.fi Messages inbox regularly. You should also make sure in your Suomi.fi settings that you have added an up-to-date email address to the service. This way you will be notified of new Suomi.fi Messages by email. If you use the Suomi.fi mobile application, you can also enable push notifications.

Please note that genuine email notifications about Suomi.fi Messages will never contain any links, as they are only intended to inform you that you have received a message that you can read in the Suomi.fi Messages service.

You can also deactivate Suomi.fi Messages at any time if you can no longer use e-services. To do so, withdraw your consent to receive digital messages on the Suomi.fi website or in the mobile application. You will then receive messages from different public authorities by paper mail, for example.
